Welcome to Satchels & Soap - the no-holds-barred journey to saving for that elusive deposit.
Firstly, an introduction. I (girl) am a spendaholic, with a serious weakness for bags and cushions, working in fashion and interiors PR in London. The other I (boy) is also a spendaholic, although his weaknesses are somewhat different, mainly revolving around sport/bikes/clothes/cufflinks. We live together in a little rented house somewhere outside London - this is what we want to change!
It all began on a dreary, damp day way back at the end of 2011, the boyfriend and I had the standard New Year conversation of 'Ok we'll save up this year, like really, properly save, and hopefully we can buy a flat of our own'. I think we've had the same conversation for the last three years and so far it hasn't gone quite to plan; 2012 will be different!
The first couple of weeks were fine, we stayed in, exhausted our lovefilm subscription, saw friends and generally hibernated like everyone else but, we all know that going cold turkey never really works - enter Satchels and Soap. To be more precise i should really say 1 x satchel, 1 x nearly satchel (man-bag), 1 x soap, 1 x candle, 1 x butter knife, 1 x steak knives set and a tester hand cream but it doesn't really have the same ring does it?
One fateful day (last Sunday) we thought it would be a brilliant idea to have a day trip to Brighton - the sun was shining, it was beautifully crisp and, after a month of solitude, we needed to get out of the house. It was a fool-proof plan, we would wander through the laines, grab a spot of lunch and generally mosey around in the fresh sea air; what could possibly go wrong!
Here are the first of what I'm sure will be many slip ups in our mission to be completely boring and get our deposit together...
